  INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Your BPC 2008 abstract will be published within a supplement to the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology (JPP) in print and online. To facilitate the submission and publication process you should adhere to the following instructions.

1
An online submission process is to be used and you MUST use the Word template provided.

2
The title of your submission, author names (initial and surname) and affiliations should be entered separately (department, institution, country (an email for the corresponding author should be supplied). The name of the presenting author should be entered first.

3
Arial 10 point font should be used. The main body of the abstract should be typed in one column within the template and presented under the following sub-headings: Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions and References. The inclusion of references is optional but no more than three references may be cited. The main body of the abstract including references should not exceed 500 words.

4
Either a single table or a single graphical image (black and white photograph or line-drawing) may be included in the abstract. If a table or an image is included the word count of the main body of the abstract including references should not exceed 350 words (i.e a table or fig will account for 150 words of your 500 word count).

5
Any table should be formatted using the ‘table’ feature of your word processor program and should not exceed 8.2cm in width. A title for the table must be supplied.

6
Any line-drawing (e.g. chemical structure, graph, etc) should not exceed 8.2cm in width and all captions and associated text within the drawing should be clearly legible at this size. Any line drawing should be saved as a separate .tif file at a minimum of 1200 dpi resolution which can be uploaded separately with your Word template as part of the submission process. A title/legend for the figure must be supplied (see 8*).

7
Any high quality black and white image included should not exceed 8.2cm in width and 5cm in depth. The image should be saved as a separate .tif file at a minimum of 300 dpi resolution. The .tif file can be separately uploaded with your Word template as part of the submission process. A title/legend for the figure must be supplied (see 8*).

8
If your abstract contains a figure, a self-contained figure legend entitled “figure 1” should be placed on a separate line at the end of your abstract in the Word template provided*.

9
References should appear in the text using Harvard Style (the author/date mode of citation); e.g. Green (2006), Green & Black (2006), Green et al (2006). No more than three references may be included. At the end of the text, list the references in the following format; e.g.
Green, J., Black, A.T. (2006) J. Pharm. Pharmacol. 58: 439-448.

10
All research communicated requiring ethical approval must state that approval has been obtained from the relevant local ethics committee.

11
Abstracts not formatted as described above will be immediately returned to the authors. The onus lies with the author to resolve any issues with the abstract in a timely manner before publication.

12
All abstracts must communicate a clear scientific message which falls within one of the conference subject areas [1-12]. Abstracts lacking in quantitative or qualitative data will be immediately returned to the authors.

13
When submitting an abstract please ensure that all necessary approvals have been made including those made by industrial sponsors, where appropriate.

The closing date for receipt of abstracts is: Friday 14th MARCH 2008 at 5pm

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF ABSTRACT
Your abstract will be acknowledged via an automated service. Each submission will be assigned a unique abstract number which must be quoted on any correspondence.

  ACCEPTANCE
Abstracts will be reviewed for acceptance, in consultation with the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and collaborating science organisations. The corresponding author will be notified of the outcome, the date and the format (poster or podium) of the presentation by Friday 23rd of May. If you have not heard from us by this date, please contact the BPC secretariat at bpcscience@rpsgb.org The corresponding author is responsible for notifying these details to other authors, including the presenting author. Abstracts once accepted for publication can not be changed, except as identified by the evaluation panel, and can not be withdrawn, except with the consent of the Conference Secretariat. The Secretariat will endeavour to offer the format preferred by the Corresponding Author but this can not be guaranteed. Some presenters may be invited to present their work in both poster and oral formats.

Please note: all presenters must register for the Conference

  POSTER DISPLAY
Posters should be prepared in PORTRAIT format. A board 2 metres high and 1 metre wide will be made available for each poster. Oversize posters will not be accepted for display. Posters must be self-explanatory as presenters may only be available at specific times to answer questions. Lettering must be readable at 2 metres from the panel (minimum height of characters 8 mm, minimum line width 0.7 mm).

Corresponding authors will be notified of the day their poster should be displayed. The presenting author must be present during attended periods, which will be notified.

  ORAL (PODIUM) PRESENTATIONS
Oral (podium) presentations will be made of selected papers in some subjects. Full instructions will be provided following the acceptance of submissions but for initial guidance, oral communications will be limited to a presentation time of 10 minutes. Corresponding authors will be notified if the abstract has been selected for podium presentation.

  PRIZES
Prizes will be awarded to selected posters and oral presentations. Awarding bodies include the APSGB and the JPAG.

  NEW SCIENTISTS
Academic, research or industrial scientists with less than five years of experience in their present career are invited to present their work in a "New Scientists" oral session at the conference. Submitted abstracts must conform to the requirements for science abstracts. Those wishing to be considered for presentation at this session should indicate this by selecting this option on the on-line submission.

  PUBLICATION
All accepted abstracts presented at the conference will be published in a supplement to the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology (JPP) and will be available at the conference. Abstracts will also be accessible at www.bpc2008.org. The JPP would also welcome submissions of the full paper from the published abstracts; this can be done online at http://www.editorialmanager.com/jpp

  LICENCE TO PUBLISH
Copyright of the submitted abstract will remain with the author(s) but in order to publish the abstract the publisher will require all authors of each abstract to grant a licence to publish. Formal written agreement is not required but authors are advised that by submitting an abstract for the BPC the publishers will consider that authors have read the licence and agree to accept its terms should the abstract be accepted for publication. Any enquiries should be directed to the Secretariat at bpcscience@rpsgb.org. Abstract titles and authors may be posted onto a website at any time after submission of the abstracts. The full abstracts will not be made available until the Conference.
